Usually, at the US TV upfronts — the annual event where the networks showcase their best upcoming programming in the hopes of securing big advertising commitments — the celebrities are the stars of the show. With more money being spent, advertisers are paying closer attention to what data they can use to inform their TV ad buys and prove that TV is powering their sales. It found that taking advantage of a media company's unique upfront data offerings, including retail data, was a top reason for advertisers to buy linear TV or connected TV in the upfronts, cited by 37%. US retail media CTV ad spend will increase by 86.6% this year to reach $4.19 billion, according to Emarketer. And Walmart's recent deal to acquire the TV manufacturer Vizio reflects the growing trend of retail media's convergence with TV advertising.

Walmart's internal systems had more than a dozen "major incidents" in the last two months alone. An additional two major incidents occurred this past weekend, the person said. Walmart's global technology platform runs the retailer's core business operations, including in-store point-of-sale systems, e-commerce, and distribution and fulfillment centers. Internal emails obtained by BI show that Walmart's business is interrupted by issues with its global tech platform at a far more frequent rate than previously reported. Last year, Walmart spent $11.8 billion on supply chain, customer-facing initiatives, and technology, according to a recent SEC filing, up from $9.2 billion the year before.

Washington, DC CNN —Americans racked up a record amount of credit card debt in 2023, soaring past a trillion dollars. “Consumers still have a lot of money left over to be able to spend, so the credit card data is often misinterpreted,” Russell Price, chief economist at Ameriprise Financial, told CNN. According to a LendingTree analysis of more than 350,000 credit reports, the average unpaid credit card balance was $6,864 in the fourth quarter. Overall, US household debt (including credit card balances) rose to a new high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% from the prior three-month period. So, while there certainly isn’t a shortage of economic hurdles bedeviling people’s budget — and credit card debt has surged — the big picture indicates that, so far, Americans (and their economy) remain healthy.

Just weeks after Amazon cut hundreds of jobs across its Prime Video and MGM Studios divisions, the advertisements officially arrived on Prime Video on Jan. 29. This gives Amazon first-hand customer data from Prime members it can leverage for advertisers who want to show ads during Prime Video shows. "While still early days, streaming TV advertising continues to grow quickly," Jassy said on the fourth-quarter earnings call. This week alone, Capital One agreed to acquire Discover for $35 billion, Truist Financial announced a $15.5 billion sale of its insurance arm, and Walmart shook hands to buy TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion. The trio of transactions, worth a combined $53 billion, have lifted the value of deals announced worldwide this year to $425 billion — a 55% increase from the same period in 2023, Bloomberg estimates. Transactions worth more than $5 billion plunged 60%, from nearly 150 deals in 2021 to fewer than 60 last year, LSE Group found. Potential headwinds include stubborn inflation, a surprise recession, escalating armed conflicts, regulatory crackdowns, and uncertainty over this year's presidential election.

After Walmart 's earnings report impressed Wall Street on Tuesday, CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC's Jim Cramer that his company has unique advantages in the advertising space. "When you grow your digital reach, and you've got an e-commerce business that's scaling like ours is," McMillon said, "You get an opportunity to sell advertisements, and we can connect the dots for advertisers." Walmart's global advertising business climbed 28% for the year, McMillon said, adding that the big-box retailer's e-commerce sales topped $100 billion for the first time. Rosenblatt's price target is now the highest forecast for the stock on Wall Street. Caterpillar — Shares pulled back 2% following a downgrade to in line from Evercore ISI, which noted concern over a longer-than-expected outlook for earnings growth. Walmart has agreed to buy TV maker Vizio , the companies announced Tuesday, as the largest U.S. retailer grows its high-profit ad business. Walmart will acquire Vizio for $2.3 billion, or $11.50 per share, in cash. But in buying the company, Walmart touted the potential to boost its ad business through Vizio's SmartCast Operating System, which allows users to stream free ad-supported content on their TVs. As it pushes for higher profits, the retail titan has tried to expand its media business Walmart Connect, which comes with bigger profit margins than selling groceries or clothing. Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s buying TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion to shore up its advertising business and create a more potent rival to Amazon’s booming ad business. The deal would give Walmart more ways to offer ads through Vizio televisions, as well as create entertainment options exclusively for customers with Vizio TVs. “We also believe it enables a profitable advertising business that is rapidly scaling,” Walmart US chief revenue officer Seth Dallaire said in a news release Tuesday. Walmart wants to move into the lucrative advertising space to supplement its low-margin retail business. Its advertising business reached $3.4 billion last year, but makes up less than 1% of its total sales.

Walmart : The largest U.S. retailer reported a strong holiday quarter Tuesday, with sales rising 6% in three months ended Jan. 31. The decline comes after Walmart announced a deal to acquire TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion. "I would point out, just so people know," that Walmart says the deal is slightly dilutive to near-term earnings per share, "which surprised me," Jim said. Capital One : The company on Monday announced an all-stock deal , valued at $35.3 billion, to acquire credit card rival Discover Financial Services . "Buried within Discover is a payments system that may be unrivaled, that [Capital One CEO] Richard Fairbank can put to work," Jim said, reiterating his call to buy Capital One stock into Tuesday's weakness.
